Mommy and me

A Nature-based "Mommy and Me Program" will be starting this fall at Sweetbriar Nature Center for children ages 2-3 ½ yrs old. Children love exploring and making discoveries. Our 55 acre preserve includes fields and a forest for taking short hikes. Children will visit the sensory garden to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of nature. Play with instruments, create art and more at our new interactive discovery play area. Program Coordinator/Educator Nancy Adornetto will introduce fun, interactive activities for you and your child. Grandparents, Aunts/Uncles and Babysitters welcome!

April Discovery Days: Fun for your child over the holidays

During our vacation week programs children will have the opportunity to learn about the wonders of the natural world through hands-on activities, live animals, and interactive games. Each day is a different nature theme. Children can be registered by the day or for the whole week.

Dates: April 14-18, themes include April Showers Bring May Flowers, Warming Up, Get the Dirt, Road to Rio, Water World.
Ages: 3-11
How Much: $250/week for members, $290/week for non-members; $65/day for members, $75/day for non-members, discount for early registration up to March 15. Sibling discounts also available, Aftercare available for $20/day until 5pm.

The Rainbow Almond Tree: A Celebration of the Tropical Rain Forests

Join Sweetbriar naturalist, educator, and writer, Eric Young, as he shares his passion for the tropical rain forests. Staff and volunteers will share some or our resident rain forest animals, trek to our simulated rain forest, and Mr. Young will read his story, The Rainbow Almond Tree. Participants will take home a craft of their own creation to remember the rain forests.

When: Saturday, March 22, 1pm to 2:30pm

How Much: $5/person for members and scouts, $6/person for non-members

Spring Discovery Days

Stories for the Earth

Join educators, naturalists, storytellers, poets, and others for a celebration of the Earth through stories, readings, and poems. Nature enthusiasts from all over Suffolk County and beyond will come to share their love of nature with all who attend. Participants will also get to interact with some of Sweetbriar’s resident animals, create a craft to take home and take a walk on our preserve to enjoy the spring day.

When: Saturday, April 12, 1pm to 4pm

Spring Festival

Sweetbriar welcomes the season with a fun filled day of face painting, games, stories, wildlife programs, egg hunts, animal presentations and a guest appearance by the Easter Bunny.

Yard Sale for Wildlife: A Call For Donations

Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown is holding its annual yard sale to help care for our resident animals and the injured, sick and orphaned animals that citizens bring to us for care. We are looking for donations of antiques, collectibles, knick-knacks, and other items under 50 pounds. All should be in very good condition. No toys, or games unless they are unopened, and no books, or clothing. Creatures Of the Night

Join Sweetbriar Naturalists for an evening with owls and other creatures of the night. Participants will meet two of our resident owls, an opossum, and a couple of other nocturnal wanderers. Then we will go on a night hike on our preserve to call some of our wild owls and then return for an owl treat. Dress for the weather. Heavy rain cancels.

When: Friday, May 9, 7pm to 9:30pm

Wildlife Baby Shower

Celebrate wildlife babies and support Sweetbriar as it gears up for the Spring and Summer season, when we care for many orphaned and injured animals. Meet animals and see how baby squirrels and baby birds are cared for. Take a nature walk to find signs of animal homes where baby animals are being raised and make a craft.

Turtle Walk

Join us in our annual box turtle scavenger hunt and count. The turtles will be examined and tagged and to be released after our annual wildlife/craft fair. Meet one of our resident Eastern Box Turtles along with some of our other turtles and create a turtle craft to take home. Wear long pants and closed toed shoes.

When: Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8, 9am to Noon

Wildlife and Craft Fair

Come to Sweetbriar for a day of fun and education. Along with the usual exciting entertainment, crafts, games, face painting, animal shows, craft vendors there will be a falconry demonstration with live birds of prey and a live wolf. Food and refreshments available.

Rainbows in Nature: A Celebration of Spring

Come visit Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown for an afternoon of treasure hunts, an animal presentation, relay races, face painting, and of course tours of our wondrous enclosed Butterfly Garden. Highlighting the event will be local author, Michelle Zimmerman, as she leads children on magical adventures through story and a full spectrum of rainbow fun including a butterfly hunt and a rainbow butterfly craft to take home.
