Spring Weekend Programs and Events 2018

Pre-registration is required for all public programs unless specified.    Scouts and members receive a $2 discount for each person in their family for all weekend programs other than special events like our Spring Festival and Wildlife and Craft Fair.

Spring Discovery Days for ages 5 to 11

Once again Sweetbriar Nature Center will be offering daily natural science programs over the school breaks elementary school children.   Each day will be a different natural science theme.  Each day is chock-filled with fun hands-on activities, interaction with our residents, non-releasable wildlife, crafts, games, and much more.   Parents can register their child/children for one day, two days, three days, four days, or the entire week.  Themes from Monday through Friday are Spring Adventures, Watery Worlds, On the Move, Temperature’s Rising, Days Of the Dinosaurs

When: April 2 – 6,  9am to 3pm daily, after care available for an additinal charge                                                                                                  Who: Children ages 5 to 11                                                                                                                                                                                                       How Much: $70/day, $300/week for members, $80/day, $350/week for non-members 


Yard Sale for the Earth

Buy your mother a gift for mother’s day, get ready for next year’s holidays a bit early, treat yourself to a gift and to top it off help the Earth by buying reused and recycled products to reduce your impact on the planet.  


When: Saturday, April 28 and Sunday April 29, 10am to 3pm, no early birds please

Donations to help out our wildlife are appreciateed

Earth Day Everyday

Celebrate the wonders of the natural world and living things that share the planet with us.   Children will meet resident animals, enjoy the natural world through their senses, and go on a scavenger hunt to find out some of the things they can do to help the natural world.   Come away with a craft to help reduce your impact on the Earth.

 Creatures Of the Night

Visit Sweetbriar to meet some nocturnal animals and embark on a walk into the darkness to enjoy the night and maybe call in an owl or two.  Dress warmly and bring a flashlight just in case.

When: Friday, May 18, 7:30pm

Who: Families with children 7 and up

How much: $10 /person



 Wildlife Baby Shower


It’s that time of year again, Sweetbriar’s annual Wildlife Baby Shower.  Come celebrate nature as it comes alive in the spring with beautiful flowers, vibrant green leaves, and, of course, baby animals.  Sweetbriar takes in hundreds of orphaned animals a year.  A Sweetbriar rehabilitator will show you how baby animals are cared for by their parents in the wild and here at the nature center.  A cake to celebrate will be shared with all to celebrate the occasion.

Turtle Walk

When: Saturday and Sunday, June 2 and 3,  9am to
NoonJoin us in our annual box turtle scavenger hunt and count.  The turtles will be examined and tagged and to be released after our annual wildlife/craft fair.  Meet one of our resident Eastern Box Turtles along with some of our other turtles and create a turtle craft to take home.  Wear long pants and closed toed shoes.

Wildlife and Craft Fair

Come to Sweetbriar’s annual Wildlife and Craft Fair for a day of fun and education   It is also the grand opening of our enclosed Butterfly Garden.  Along with this exciting event musical entertainment, crafts, games, face painting, animal shows, craft vendors and much more will be offered throughout the day.  Food and refreshments available for purchase.  The Adirondack Wildlife Refuge will be coming down with some special guests, including a coyote.

Mud Day at Sweebiar


Come all those people who love to get muddy to celebrate international mud day at Sweetbriar.  We will be playing in water, mud, and other messy things.  Children will being making mud pies, magic mud, princess mud and slime.  Mud day is the perfect Father’s Day experience.

Rainbows in Nature: A Celebration of Summer


Come visit Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown for an afternoon with butterflies including a visit to our enclosed butterfly garden to walk amidst these colorful insects.

Highlighting the event will be local author, Michelle Zimmerman, as

she leads children on magical adventures through story and a full

spectrum of rainbow fun including a butterfly hunt and a rainbow

butterfly craft to take home. 


When: Saturday, June 16, 1-2:30pm, Please arrive before 1pm
