Winter/Spring Weekend Programs 2017

Pre-registration is required for all public programs unless specified.    Scouts and members receive a $2 discount for each person in their family for all weekend programs other than special events like our Spring Festival and Wildlife and Craft Fair.

Come find out if Sweetbriar Sam is planning to hibernate for another 6 weeks or predict an early spring.   We will have a fun scavenger hunt to learn some facts about groundhogs, play with shadows, and meet some other animal hibernators and weather predictors.  Make a fun groundhog craft to take home.

We Love Animals (A Valentine’s Day Celebration)

Calling all animal lovers!  Come and be our Valentine and join us at Sweetbriar for an afternoon dedicated to the love of animals.   Meet several of our loveable animals, explore the nature center looking for  wildlife couples, and create a craft to show your love of animals.

Sweetbriar Summer Programs Open House

Sweetbriar will offer children and parents an opportunity to learn about our Summer Discovery Programs.   Some of our past program participants will lead you on tours around the nature center including visiting our rain forest room, the new woodland exhibit, and  meeting with some of our resident animals.  The Program Director will be available to answer any questions. Refreshments will be available. 

When: Saturday, March 4, Noon to 4pm

Who: Families with children 3 to 17

How much: Free

Creatures Of the Night  

Visit Sweetbriar to meet some nocturnal animals and embark on a walk into the darkness to enjoy the night and may be call in an owl or two.  Dress warmly and bring a flashlight just in case.

When: Friday, March 10, 7pm to 9:30pm

Who: Adults (Teenagers welcome)

Sensational Snakes

Meet some sensational kinds of serpents, and learn about their special tools for survival.  We will also make fun crafts and enjoy some hands on activities to learn more about snakes.

Forest to Forest: Our Vanishinig Treasures

Kick off the spring by joining Just before the new year, Sweetbriar opened its new local woodland exhibit.   The children, and adults too, have enjoyed the sensory experience the exhibit offers, including a crawl space for visitors to see the underground world of a forest.  Alongside this exciting sensory experiences is our amazing simulated rain forest that has been standing for almost twenty years.  On this day Sweetbriar staff will help participants explore both forests, visit the forests on our preserve, and meet some of our resident animals that live in and around trees.  Children will create an arboreal animal to take home. 

When: Saturday, March 25. 1pm to 3pm

Who: Families with children of all ages

Spring Discovery Days 

Once again Sweetbriar Nature Center will be offering daily natural science programs over the school breaks for both pre-schoolers and elementary school children..   Each day will be a different natural science themeThemes from Monday through Friday are Spring Into Spring, Sweetbriar Surprises, Warm Blooded and Loving It, Vacation Is Over, and  Eat or Be Eaten  Each day is chalk filled with fun hands-on activities, interaction with our residents, non-releasable wildlife, crafts, games, and much more.   Parents can register their child/children for one day, two days, three days, four days, or the entire week.   

Who: Children ages 5 to 11

When: April 10 through April 14, 9am to 3pm daily, after care available until 5pm for an additional charge

How Much: $70/day, $300/week for members, $80/day, $350/week for non-members

Spring Egg Hunt and Celebration

Sweetbriar welcomes the season with a fun filled day of face painting, games, stories, wildlife programs, egg hunts, animal presentations and a guest appearance by the Easter Bunny.

When: Saturday, April 15, 12  to 4pm

Who: Families of children of all ages

How much:  $15/child, $5/adult

Help support our rehabilitated wildlife!  Drop by Sweetbriar Nature Center and browse through our yard sale.  Items include household goods, collectibles, antiques, fabric, aquariums and more.   Our volunteer gardeners will be having a plant sale also.  Each dollar helps care for our animals.  Items include collectibles, antiques, knick-nacks, household goods, terrariums and aquariums, and a plant from our gardeners will be on sale.

When: Saturday and Sunday, April 29 & 30, 10am to 3pm

How much: Admission is free, donations are appreciated

 

 

Earth Day Is for the Birds

Every day is indeed Earth Day.   Earth Day also arrives in the same month when many of our feathered friends return from their long journeys to warmer climates.  Not only will Participants will get to meet some of our resident birds, including a duck, a blue jay, an owl, and a hawk.   Also, our staff of earth lovers will lead activities that will help people to better understand how they can make a bird’s life easier.   Each child will go home with a bird feeder.

Wildlife Baby Shower

It’s that time of year again, Sweetbriar’s annual Wildlife Baby Shower.  Come celebrate nature as it comes alive in the spring with beautiful flowers, vibrant green leaves, and, of course, baby animals.  Sweetbriar takes in hundreds of orphaned animals a year.  A Sweetbriar rehabilitator will show you how baby animals are cared for by their parents in the wild and here at the nature center We are asking people to bring donations to help us feed our wildlife (Visit our webpage, sweetbriarnc.org/wildlife-rehabilitation-2/, for donation ideas).

 When: May  21, 1 -3pm, Please arrive before 1pm

Turtle Walk

Join us in our annual box turtle scavenger hunt and count.  The turtles will be examined and tagged and to be released after our annual wildlife/craft fair.  Meet one of our resident Eastern Box Turtles along with some of our other turtles and create a turtle craft to take home.  Wear long pants and closed toed shoes.

When: Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4, 9am to Noon

Who: All Welcome

Butterfly and Bird Wildlife/Craft Fair

Come to Sweetbriar’s annual Wildlife and Craft Fair for a day of fun and education   It is also the grand opening of our enclosed Butterfly Garden.  Along with this exciting event musical entertainment, crafts, games, face painting, animal shows, craft vendors and much more will be offered throughout the day.  Food and refreshments available for purchase.

Mud Day for Father’s Day

Come all those people who love to get muddy to celebrate international mud day at Sweetbriar.  We will be playing in water, mud, and other messy things.  Children will being making mud pies, magic mud, princess mud and slime.  Mud day is the perfect Father’s Day experience.

Rainbows in Nature: A Celebration of Summer

Come visit Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown for an afternoon of

treasure hunts, an animal presentation, relay races, face painting,

and of course tours of our wondrous enclosed Butterfly Garden.

Highlighting the event will be local author, Michelle Zimmerman, as

she leads children on magical adventures through story and a full

spectrum of rainbow fun including a butterfly hunt and a rainbow

butterfly craft to take home. 

 When: Saturday, June 17, 1-2:30pm, Please arrive before 1pm

Insectigations

Learn about the lives of insects that inhabit our gardens and natural meadows.  Meet some bugs up close, and go on a bug safari.  There might even be a surprise bug puppet show.  Then make a fun craft and enjoy a healthy snack.
